Is the field sobriety test a scientific test?

If you're taking medication, it can absolutely have an effect on how well you perform on those field sobriety tests. Let's use an example, you've had surgery, and in that recent surgery you've been given a muscle relaxer to help you with your pain management. What happens if I refuse to take the field sobriety test in California?

If a police officer asks you to do field sobriety test on the roadside and you choose not to do so, that's your break here in California. You can refuse to take those tests. You do have to state your name, state your address, give them your California drivers license. But you are not required to do those tests. Is there a penalty for refusing to take the field sobriety test in California?
